Church Calendar
Marvin Church was built in 1873 consisting of one room. The land was donated by James
Marsh, a Baptist; and Neill McQueen, a Presbyterian; each giving one-half.  It was built by
local carpenters during their free time, with materials from the area. The church was a
neighborhood project, with all denominations helping.

Services were held by James Cain, a local preacher, under the trees in the grove, weather
permitting, until the construction was complete and a pastor could be assigned.  Rev. C.M.
Gentry was the first pastor assigned to Marvin Church on December 3, 1880.

James Cain, representing the church, presented the church register on June 4, 1881
bringing it under the Cumberland Circuit North Carolina Conference and also stating the
official name of the church as Marvin Methodist Episcopal Church South.  Marvin UMC was
named after Enoc
h Mather Marvin, a noted and distinguished Methodist preacher in the
early history of Methodism.
He was commissioned by the Methodist General Conference to
survey missions around the world.

The first deed was dated 1878 and registered at the courthouse September 10, 1880
between Neill and Flora C. McQueen and the trustees of the church for the sum of one
dollar for four acres.

Around 1912 the vestibule and wings were built by two men from Hope Mills.  They would
walk from Hope Mills on Monday morning and stay at the church all week.  Farmers in the
community would take them their meals using horse and buggy and sometimes would take
them back to Hope Mills on Friday or Saturday with a horse and buggy.

Today Marvin UMC celebrates God's goodness and blessings.  We continue to be a
beacon of light in the Grays Creek community.  As you can see Marvin Church has had a
long history of serving God by serving others and we continue to "be doers of the word" in
the twenty first century.  We invite you to come and be a part of a church that is on the
move, charting new territory for God and His church:  Marvin United Methodist Church.
