Marvin United Methodist Church
Nursery Policy & Procedures
Welcome to our nursery. You will see a lot of changes in 2008 to include crib, changing
station, and toddler play area.
The nursery is staffed with volunteers. We have one room to house children from
0 to 4 years of age. Due to facility restrictions the nursery will be split into 2 sides,
one for infants and the other for toddlers.
Wendy Bledsoe, Nursery Coordinator, will answer questions you might have.
You can contact her by email at mbledsoe1@nc.rr.com.
Nursery Hours – A nursery is provided for infants and toddlers for the 11:00 AM
worship service and some church wide events and activities. The nursery will
open 15 minutes prior to the beginning of the church service and will promptly
close 15 minutes after the service is over.
Nursery Scheduling – Initially, it is the responsibility of the Nursery Coordinator
to secure the proper staff for worship services and functions requiring childcare.
However, if a volunteer is unable to cover their scheduled shift, it is their
responsibility to find a substitute from the approved list to fill in for them. In the
event a substitute can not be found the Nursery Coordinator must be contacted
immediately.
Adult/Child Ratios – There should be no more than twelve children at a time in
the nursery. Every effort will be made to keep the ratio of one adult to every six
children, and one adult to every four infants. We also require that at least two
workers be on duty at all times. Under no circumstances should the children be left
alone for ANY amount of time. Caregivers are required to directly supervise
children by sight AND hearing at all times – even while they are sleeping.
Nursery Volunteers – Our nursery volunteers consist of parents, youth, and other
members of our church family. The schedule will be mailed out prior to the new
year and reminders are given each month in the church newsletter and as well as
the weekly church bulletin. All volunteers will be required to participate in a training
session on our Policies and Procedures, complete a criminal background
check form, and attend aChild/Infant CPR class. New church members will be
asked to wait for six months before working in the nursery.
Dress Code – Slacks and dresses are considered proper attire for nursery
workers. Please do not wear short shorts, or other inappropriate or suggestive
attire while working in the nursery.
Room Preparation:
1. Check the room for orderliness.
2. Make sure the Check In/Out Sheet is available for parents to sign.
3. Set out labels with pens or markers for putting names on juice cups, etc.
4. Have all diaper changing materials ready for use.
5. Make sure all tables are sanitized.
6. Wash hands.
Nursery Activities – All activities for children will be developmentally and
age appropriate. It is our goal for the children to have a pleasant visit in the
nursery, and to achieve this, the workers should interact with the children as they
play and talk with them.
- Videos – Videos may be used on occasion, but must be approved by the
Nursery Coordinator. Videos must be rated G, have a Christian and/or
educational themes, and display appropriate behavior and language.
- Snacks – Appropriate snacks are available in the nursery. Do not bring
snacks from home due to another child having possible food allergies.
Caregivers will make sure that children do not eat while walking, running, or
playing, lying down or riding on vehicles. There will be a designated time for
snacks and all children will be seated to maintain cleanliness of the nursery
and to prevent choking hazards.
Infants
- Infants will be held while given bottles.
- Diapers need to be checked regularly and soiled diapers need to be
changed immediately.
- While placing babies in the cribs, they are to be placed on their backs
(unless instructed otherwise by the child’s parents)
Cleanliness – The nursery should be the cleanest room in the Church, which is
for the safety of both the children and the workers.
- All equipment surfaces must be wiped down with disinfecting/Clorox wipes at
the end of each nursery session.
- All toys that have been handled and mouthed must be washed immediately
(place in Plastic Container labeled “Toys” to be washed).
- Sheets must be changed and washed after each use.
- Spills must be cleaned up immediately.
- Caregivers must follow general hand washing guidelines. Hands should be
washed/sanitized after each diaper change or cleaning any bodily discharge,
such as wiping noses.
Age Limits – Only Children of the appropriate age, (0 to 4 years), are allowed in
the nursery. No child over the age of four should be in the nursery.
Safety – All Infants/Children should be signed in by their parents/guardians on
the appropriate form provided and signed out by the same parent/guardian when
picking up their child. Parents must fill out an information form on each child and
the information should be updated monthly.
Illness Policy - If a child is visibly ill or running a fever the parent will be notified
immediately to pick up their child.
Inconsolable Children - Workers should make every effort to engage unhappy
children in play or rock them. Sitting on the floor with the children is very effective
and calming. If a child is inconsolable (15 minutes of non-stop crying), the parents
will be notified immediately. Under no circumstances should you let a child "cry it
out". This policy will help to fortify the trust between our parents and our nursery
workers.
Clean up and Departure – The above mentioned cleanliness procedure must be
done at the end of each nursery session. Toys shall be put away in their proper
places. Labels and pens, snacks, diaper supplies, cleaning supplies put away in
the cabinet. The diaper pail/trash should be emptied and all lights should be
turned off and doors locked.
Confidentiality – All information about the children and their families shall
remain confidential unless it is determined that harm may come to the child. In that
event, the Nursery Coordinator and Director of Christian Education should be
notified immediately and actions will be taken in line with the “Safe Sanctuary”
procedures.
Emergency Procedures:
- A First Aid Kit is located in the Nursery in a marked cabinet.
- Safety Guidelines are posted.
- Church office is open next door where a telephone is available for
emergencies.
Mission Statement:
To be a church that cares and nurtures
Philosophy:
Children are God’s Greatest Gift.
He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms,
he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name
welcomes me and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who
sent me.” Mark 9:36-36
“....Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of
God belongs to such as these.” Mark 10:14
